Smart Roads

Prisma’s distributed optical sensing solution provides real-time intelligence and uniquely reliable monitoring of smart roads. The system lowers deployment costs by using standard, pre-deployed fiber-optic cables, including pre-deployed fiber-optic cables installed within conduits or concrete ditches.

These fiber-optic cables – which are installed as part of most modern infrastructures – operate as the system’s “sensors” and enable Prisma to monitor up to 100 km of smart roads per Optical Interrogator (OI) unit.

Prisma identifies the acoustic signature of each event at or near the road, at a high resolution that allows classification of the events and identification of their location with unprecedented accuracy and drastically reduces the “noise” of false positive and negative alarms. In the road environment – i.e., within a distance that you pre-define – Prisma flags for classification a range of events that relate to a wide variety of use cases, such as:

Solution Architecture

Prisma’s platform is Plug & Play – with zero infrastructure installation, and minimal maintenance. 

 

One OI unit is required every 100 km. The OI unit is connected to a single Command & Control (C&C) unit located in the customer’s operating center. 

 

The OI unit attaches directly to the customer’s fiber-optic cable with a simplex SC/APC fiber, which connects to a single fiber in the patch panel – ensuring access to a single fiber only, i.e., not compromising the activity or security of any other fibers in the cable. An Internet connection (LAN or WiFi) is required to transmit the monitored data to a control unit. 

 

Scaling up involves use of multiple OI units, each of which provides coverage for up to 100 km. Each OI unit is located in a communication room. All of the units combined require a single C&C unit in the customer’s operating center.

 

There is no need for discrete sensors. Upgrades are software based; no hardware upgrades are required.

The first-generation fiber-sensing technologies which are currently available suffer from poor performance – generating a high rate of false alarms and leading to poor target classification. In addition, their range is limited, and this creates a challenging business case for long infrastructure.

Prisma’s solution has raw data of unparalleled quality. We leverage machine learning and apply Big Data techniques to data sets that are several orders of magnitude wider, with significantly higher SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) levels – leading to very high detection probability and advanced target classification. 

 

Upgrades to the system, including the addition of new features and capabilities, involve software solutions that are installed remotely.

All Information Consolidated in a Single Location & Single Display

The C&C unit presents the consolidated data of multiple OI units, with a real-time map and detection table that displays the following information:

  • Detection of events

  • Classification of events

  • Location of events at a high resolution

  • Identification of multiple, simultaneous events without interference or crosstalk
