Shut down even one of these, and the economic consequences can be dire \u2013 as we saw in the recent<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.prnewswire.com\/news-releases\/colonial-pipeline-failure-exposes-an-obvious-willful-ignorance-to-take-cybersecurity-seriously-301292071.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Colonial Pipeline shutdown<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which resulted from a cyberattack, and are currently seeing with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-suspends-nord-stream-2-pipeline\/av-60884871#:~:text=Germany%20suspends%20Nord%20Stream%202%20pipeline%20The%20Nord,in%20response%20to%20Russia%27s%20move%20in%20eastern%20Ukraine.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nord Stream 2 pipeline closure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oil &amp; gas pipelines, which form the backbone of modern energy systems, are highly-complex physical infrastructure assets. And just like any critical infrastructure, they require close monitoring, tight security and strict ongoing maintenance. But unlike an oil-fired electrical power production facility for example, the geographic scale on which pipelines operate is so incredibly distributed, that even understanding precisely where a problem exists is a challenge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, here are the top three monitoring challenges pipeline operators currently face, and possible solutions:<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><b>Challenge 1 &#8211; Theft\u2026 AKA Hot-Tapping<\/b><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As energy prices continue to rise, theft from oil &amp; gas pipelines is increasingly prevalent. In Nigeria, one of the developing world\u2019s major oil producers, an estimated<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/guardian.ng\/energy\/dealing-with-growing-menace-of-crude-oil-theft\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">250,000 barrels of crude oil per day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are stolen from pipelines. In Mexico, authorities have reported an incredible<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/insightcrime.org\/news\/heightened-fuel-theft-across-mexico-as-international-oil-prices-remain-high\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">944% rise in cases of oil theft<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since 2021 \u2013 with nearly 3200 illicit pipeline taps discovered.
