PrismaRail, Prisma’s next-generation smart monitoring solution, uses its patented Hyper-Scan Fiber-Sensing™ technology enabling ultra-sensitive and intelligent-learning detection to provide real-time intelligence and uniquely reliable monitoring of the railroad tracks, trains, and everything in their proximity.

The solution improves railway transportation monitoring and safety by facilitating faster and better processes for maintaining and protecting smart railways and trains – while lowering deployment costs using standard, pre-deployed fiber-optic cables (including cables installed within a conduit or concrete ditch). These fiber-optic cables, which are part of most modern infrastructures, operate as the system’s “sensors” and enable PrismaRail to monitor and detect the railway environment at remote locations, providing surveillance and real-time threat detection for up to 100 km per PrismaRail unit or 200 km per dual-unit.

PrismaRail identifies the acoustic signature of each event at or near the railway lines, at a resolution that allows classification of the events and identification of their location with unprecedented accuracy and dramatically reduces the “noise” of false positive and negative alarms.

Solution Architecture

PrismaRail’s platform is Plug & Play – with zero infrastructure installation, and minimal maintenance. 


The platform provides monitoring for up to 100 km per PrismaRail unit or 200 km per dual-unit. The unit is connected to a single Command & Control (C&C) unit located in the customer’s operating center. 


The PrismaRail unit attaches directly to the customer’s fiber-optic cable with a simplex SC/APC fiber, which connects to a single fiber in the patch panel – ensuring access to a single fiber only, i.e., not compromising the activity or security of any other fibers in the cable. An Internet connection (LAN or WiFi) is required to transmit the monitored data to a control unit. 


Scaling up involves use of multiple PrismaRail units, each of which provides coverage for up to 100 km. Each unit is located in a communication room. All of the units combined require a single C&C unit in the customer’s operating center.


There is no need for discrete sensors. Upgrades are software based; no hardware upgrades are required.

Key Features & Benefits

Systems involving thousands of sensors along the railway are expensive for deployment, operation, and maintenance. The alternative is fiber sensing – using very long fibers as sensors – which is probably the most cost-effective solution. But until PrismaRail, existing solutions were ineffective due to high false alarm rates, poor target classification, and limited ability to use as “sensors” the optical communication fiber cables that were already installed. 


PrismaRail solves all of these issues, thanks to its revolutionary Hyper-Scan technology, which provides over 100x sensitivity improvement. 


PrismaRail has raw data of unparalleled quality. We apply Big Data techniques to data sets that are several orders of magnitude wider, with significantly higher SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) levels – leading to very high detection probability and advanced target classification. 


Upgrades to the system are software based and can be installed remotely.

The C&C unit presents the consolidated data of multiple OI units, with a real-time map and detection table that displays the following information:

  • Detection of events

  • Classification of events

  • Location of events at a high resolution

  • Identification of multiple, simultaneous events without interference or crosstalk
