PrismaSubsea, Prisma’s next-generation smart solution for monitoring the physical network, uses its patented Hyper-Scan Fiber-Sensing™ technology enabling ultra-sensitive and intelligent-learning detection to provide real-time intelligence and uniquely reliable monitoring capabilities.

Subsea Pipelines

PrismaSubsea includes several categories to improve security and reduce the risk of damage to subsea pipelines and cables due to a wide range of threats and environmental conditions.

The solution addresses multiple use cases related to subsea cables and pipeline infrastructure maintenance and protection. PrismaSubsea lowers deployment costs by using standard, pre-deployed fiber-optic cables (including cables installed within a conduit). These fiber-optic cables, which are installed as part of most modern infrastructures, operate as the system's sensors and enable PrismaSubsea to monitor and detect the subsea pipeline and cable at remote locations, providing surveillance and real-time threat detection for up to 100 km per PrismaSubsea unit or 200 per dual-unit.

PrismaSubsea identifies each event's acoustic signature at a resolution that allows classification of the events and identification of their location with unprecedented accuracy. The data quality and classification dramatically reduce the nuisance of false positive and negative alarms. In the subsea environment – i.e., within a preconfigured distance – PrismaSubsea allows smarter, faster pipeline and cable management and prevents accidental, criminal, or malicious activity by flagging for classification a range of events.

For pipeline and powerline management, two subcategories exist:

  • PrismaSubsea-Flow: Monitoring subsea pipelines

  • PrismaSubsea-Power: Subsea powerline monitoring

The monitored events include:

  • Leakage

  • Mechanical and manual tampering

  • Nearby suspicious activity

  • Human activity

  • Vandalism

  • Third-party interference

  • Inline pigging devices

  • Ground movement

  • Deformation of the infrastructure

For communication infrastructure management and naval perimeter control, two subcategories exist:

  • PrismaSubsea-Hedge: Controlling secured naval perimeters

  • PrismaSubsea-Cyber: Monitoring the physical subsea network infrastructure

The monitored events include:

  • Human activity

  • Mechanical and manual tampering

  • Nearby suspicious activity

  • Vandalism

  • Third-party interference

  • Cable movement

  • Ground activity

Solution Architecture

PrismaSubsea’s platform is Plug & Play – with zero infrastructure installation, and minimal maintenance.

The platform provides monitoring for up to 100 km per PrismaSubsea unit or 200 km per dual-unit. The unit is connected to a single Command & Control (C&C) unit located in the customer’s operating center.

The PrismaSubsea unit attaches directly to the customer’s fiber-optic cable with a simplex SC/APC connector, which connects to a single fiber in the patch panel – ensuring access to a single fiber only, i.e., not compromising the activity or security of any other fibers in the cable. An Internet connection (LAN or WiFi) is required to transmit the monitored data to a C&C unit.

Scaling up involves use of multiple PrismaSubsea units, each of which provides coverage for up to 100 km. Each unit is located in a communication room. All of the units combined require a single C&C unit in the customer’s operating center.

There is no need for discrete sensors. Upgrades are software based; no hardware upgrades are required.

Key Features & Benefits

Systems involving thousands of sensors along the subsea pipeline are expensive for deployment, operation, and maintenance. The alternative is fiber sensing - using very long fibers as sensors - which is probably the most cost-effective solution.

But before PrismaSubsea, existing solutions were ineffective due to high false alarm rates, poor target classification, and limited ability to use pre-deployed optical communication cables as "sensors".

PrismaSubsea solves all of all these issues thanks to its revolutionary Hyper-Scan technology, which offers 100x sensitivity improvement over alternative systems.

PrismaSubsea has raw data of unparalleled quality. We leverage machine learning and apply Big Data techniques to data sets that are several orders of magnitude wider, with significantly higher SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) levels – leading to very high detection probability and advanced target classification.

Upgrades to the system are software based and can be installed remotely.
