Next-generation fiber sensing applications session at the 25th seminar on optical communications

Written By  Anna Frenkel February 17, 2021 2 minutes

Prisma Photonics was invited to give a session on next-generation fiber sensing and its application in the 25th seminar on optical communications, hosted by the University of Ljubljana. As most sessions looked at optical fibers’ different communication aspects, our CEO, Dr. Eran Inbar’s presentation, show-cased another use case.

The presentation explained how Prisma Photonics uses the same, regular, telecom optical fibers to monitor and sense long-running infrastructures. Dr. Inbar focused specifically on overhead power transmission line monitoring. This use of fiber sensing could help immensely in cases like the 2018 ‘Camp Fire’ wildfire in California or regular monitoring, looking for faults. The presentation sheds more light on other use cases and displayed actual results. Dr. Inbar even had to deal with an exciting use case involving rats and their taste in cables ?.

About Prisma Photonics

Founded in 2017, Prisma Photonics provides next-generation fiber sensing for smart infrastructure, enabling a new level of monitoring sensitivity. It generates unparalleled data quality that supports better detection and target classification capabilities while dramatically reducing false positive and negative alarm rates.

The platform transforms long-range infrastructure monitoring for a wide range of sectors, including smart roads, railways, powerlines, optical networks and pipelines. With its proprietary approach, Prisma Photonics provides ultra-sensitive detection and intelligent learning detection using preexisting optical communication fibers as “sensors.”
